Coal Mining Deaths In U.S. Surge In 2017 After Hitting Report Low

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Coal mining deaths surged within the U.S. in 2017, one 12 months after they hit a report low.

The nation’s coal mines recorded 15 deaths final 12 months, together with eight in West Virginia. Kentucky had two deaths, and there have been one every in Alabama, Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming. In 2016 there have been eight U.S. coal mine deaths.

West Virginia has led the nation in coal mining deaths in six of the previous eight years. That features 2010, when 29 miners have been killed in an explosion on the Higher Huge Department mine in southern West Virginia.

Retired coal firm government David Zatezalo of Wheeling was appointed in September by President Donald Trump as the brand new chief of the Mine Security and Well being Administration.
