Thanks to Dick Tyrrell of Hilton Head Island for sharing the story of a special musical event Friday that will bring together whites and blacks, Bluffton and Hilton Head, the religious and secular -- all for charity.
The "Sing Well for Deep Well" musical variety show will feature the Voices of El Shaddai, the Hilton Head Barbershop Chorus, singers from the May River Theatre in Bluffton and the Island Treasures Quartet a cappella group. The show is at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head but the doors open at 7 p.m. and those who come early can enjoy the Alligator Dixieland Jazz Band.
Admission is free, but donations of canned goods and money for The Deep Well Project are welcomed. The event is supported by the Hilton Head Barbershoppers and the First Presbyterian Church Missions Ministry.
Deep Well is the island's privately funded, volunteer-based social services agency with the motto: "A hand up, not a hand out." Its mission is "to assist the working poor, the sick and the disabled, in emergency situations to recover and improve the quality of their lives."
The Voices of El Shaddai is a colorfully clad community choir that for almost 20 years has used music to cross cultural and racial boundaries. "Through song, we reach out and entertain people of all backgrounds in honor of the living history of our Gullah culture, African-American traditions and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," says its Web site, www.thevoicesofelshaddai.org.
The group sings spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel under the direction of Gail Ragland of Bluffton and Eddie Days of Hilton Head. Deacon Christopher Murray is president of the group.
Showtunes also will be a part of the event, with songs from "Music Man," "South Pacific" and "L'il Abner" along with selections from May River Theatre shows by Dan and Debbie Cort. Island Treasures; Ann West; Paul Gibson and Cheryl Duren; Dick Tyrrell and a cast of friends; and Gloria Gardner will perform such songs as "Lida Rose" and "Jubilation T. Cornpone." The a cappella music by the Island Treasures Quartet will include a medley of college songs and "Lida Rose" from "Music Man."
And the Hilton Head Barbershop Chorus will offer a sing-along and perform numbers such as "Down by the Riverside" and "God Bless America."
Dick said, "While the intent of our church mission team is to raise money and food donations for Deep Well, it's the fellowship generated by the performers and participating churches that is the story.
"At this economic time, the Deep Well Project is even more critical to the needy in the area."
