American people must insist pols take action

There seems to be no doubt that our gridlocked Washington politicians will push us into sequestration with all of its dangerous ramifications.

You ask: How can both parties allow our frail economy to sink into this situation? Answer: The cause is an extraordinarily stubborn partisanship that encapsulates narrow-minded, selfishness, and yes, greed. This present situation is outrageous and inexcusable. What can the average citizen -- you or I -- do about it?

First, all of us -- citizens, Congress and the administration -- must stop pointing fingers at the other party. Neither Democrats nor Republicans have all the correct answers. Lobbyist organizations, such as the National Rifle Association and Americans for Tax Reform, must not be able to financially influence Washington to the detriment of the rest of society.

Washington must establish a bipartisan approach to solving our nation's challenges, something our present politicians are incapable of or unwilling to do, a dilemma that is unprecedented in our nation's history.

It is time for some extreme measures to be taken. The silent majority of citizens, you and I, must speak out, starting at the voting booth. Those entrenched, do-nothing incumbents must be replaced with common-sense representatives who will work together across party lines to move our nation forward while instilling integrity and high ethical standards in their offices.

Among other things they must work to institute term limits and reduce the influence of lobbyists and political actions committees.

The buck ultimately stops with you and me. We deserve what we get.
