News from earlier in the week ... three USC Beaufort student-athletes earned Sun Conference Player of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 24, as Katie Rietkovich was named the softball player of the week, Caitlin Campbell was named the softball pitcher of the week and Kelli Nakano picked up women's golfer of the week honors.
Rietkovich had a huge day at the plate in the 21st-ranked Sand Sharks' only action of the week, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and seven RBIs in a doubleheader sweep against Edward Waters, helping USCB improve to 8-0.
Campbell, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., allowed three hits and struck out six over four scoreless innings against Edward Waters to improve to a team-best 3-0 and lower her ERA to 1.65.
It marks the second time this season the Sand Shark softball team has swept the weekly honors. Junior shortstop C.J. Browder and freshman pitcher Ashlie Layman claimed the initial awards two weeks ago, and USCB did not play any games during the second award period of the season, so it did not submit any nominations.
Nakano is the first honoree of the spring season for women's golf. The senior from Cave Creek, Ariz., has been the top finisher for the 12th-ranked Sand Sharks in each of their first two tournaments of the spring campaign. She tied for 16th at the World Golf Village Invitational and tied for 10th at the SCAD Spring Invitational.
