USC Beaufort baseball team grabs pair of one-run wins over Brewton-Parker

There were some firsts on Wednesday for the 21st-ranked USC Beaufort baseball team.

In his first game as a Sand Shark, junior designated hitter Ryan Walker's game-ending RBI single in the seventh inning of Game 1 gave USCB a 4-3 win over visiting Brewton-Parker at Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville for its first one-run victory of the season.

And Ryan Doeppel's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 2 helped the Sand Sharks secure a 6-5 win and the team's first doubleheader sweep of the season, pushing USC Beaufort's record to 5-7.

But as big as the wins were, the ability to fight back from behind after losing a lead showed up for the first time this season for the Sand Sharks.

"The biggest thing, besides the actual wins, is that other than (Erik) Armstrong, (Jon) Andrews and Doeppel, everybody else is young," USC Beaufort head coach Bryan Lewallyn said. "There's not much experience, so I think learning how to win is big."

Helped by two inning-ending double plays, starter Junior Delatorre (Beaufort High School) was able to keep the Sand Sharks in Game 1 after they fell behind 2-0.

The Sand Sharks stormed back in the fourth as Walker, who was just cleared to play earlier Wednesday, singled home a run and scored when Barons right fielder Billy Mullins lost a fly ball in the sun for an RBI triple off the bat of Mitchell Johnson.

Doeppel followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 lead.

After the Barons tied it up in the top of the seventh, Walker's single to right field scored Blake Cilwick with the winner in the bottom of the frame.

In the second game, USC Beaufort took an early 2-0 lead, only to lose it again after Brewton-Parker (6-4) scored three in the second inning.

But the Sand Sharks didn't stay down long, scoring two in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly by Ashly Morris and the Barons' second throwing error on a double-steal attempt.

Armstrong added his team-leading 12th RBI on a single in the third to make it 5-3.

Once again, the Sand Sharks couldn't live with prosperity, and Brewton-Parker tied it with two unearned runs in the fifth.

But Terry McClinton had USCB's second triple of the day to right-center with one out and scored on Doeppel's two-out single to right.

"We've made some improvements, though it may not look like it sometimes, but like I said, simply learning to win is big," Lewallyn said. "There are still some things we have to clean up. We're still walking too many guys and hitting guys. And at the plate, we're still taking too many fastballs and getting behind in the count. But it's nice to know you can come from behind."

Andrew Barrineau (2-0) hurled a 1-2-3 seventh to get the win after a scoreless sixth.

The Sand Sharks continue their homestand this weekend with noon doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against Fisher College.
