A 20-year-old Port Royal man was accused Thursday of sexually assaulting his cousin two years ago.
The alleged victim, who was 5 at the time, was playing at another cousin's house when Fredrico Salez lured her into his home, according to Port Royal police investigator Andre Massey. Salez sexually assaulted the girl and threatened to "call the police and have her parents taken away" if she told anyone, Massey said.
The girl recently spoke of the incident to a relative. The relative alerted her parents, who filed a police report, Massey said. An investigation began Jan. 2.
"We believe (the victim) was telling the truth," Massey said, but declined to give further details because the investigation continues.
Salez was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was in the Beaufort County Detention Center late Thursday awaiting a bond hearing.
