Republic Waste Services meeting Hilton Head expectations

Republic Waste Services has been meeting expectations for waste and recycling collection, according to Town of Hilton Head Island officials.

The town has received few complaints about service this winter, and "Republic seems to be ready to approach the challenges of the busy season and make improvements," said Scott Liggett, the town's public projects and facilities director.

The vote of confidence comes about seven months after the town warned Republic, which serves more than 13,000 residential customers, that it must meet performance requirements or risk losing its business. Republic contracts with the town to pick up household garbage and recyclables.

Town officials said they received about 130 complaints about the company in July and more than 90 the next month, many from residents complaining Republic was not providing twice-a-week pickup as required under the agreement.

The company denied it was not meeting its obligations.

Complaints began to wane in the fall, and town data indicate Republic's percentage of missed stops in November dropped by about 75 percent -- to less than two missed stops per 1,000 requests -- compared to July.

Republic and town representatives will meet next month to discuss ways to prepare for the upcoming tourist season.

"We're striving for perfection, but I don't have the expectation that we'll get there," said Liggett.

Town Council granted the company a five-year franchise in April 2011.

Since then, the amount of materials collected for recycling has increased about five-fold, according to Alice Derian, town facilities contracts and services administrator. Nearly a fourth of the town's residential waste in December was recycled.

A Republic representative said in a statement that the company will continue to work with Hilton Head officials to meet the needs of the town and its residents.
