School Choice Week begins Sunday and runs through Feb. 2.
I think we can agree that every child deserves a high-quality education. But across the country, many children are trapped in failing schools. Too often, low-income and lower middle-income children are forced to attend schools that simply don't work. I, like most Americans, want effective, motivating, challenging schools and teachers. School choice is about our kids, not educational reform. It's about what students learn, not about how they're taught. We should promote equal learning opportunities regardless of geography, and one way to do that is with school choice.
Part of being a great country is having great schools. America's strength is cultivated in its schools. American exceptionalism makes this country great, and school choice would encourage people to embrace the principle of exceptionalism in our schools. An increasing number of people blame the parents, not the teachers, for the deterioration of education in America. During this school choice week, I encourage all to do more and to do it now, to ensure that our children, and all children, are getting the education they deserve.
Last year, the legislature almost passed a limited form of school choice. Call your representative and ask them to support full school choice. Write your local school board and demand school choice. Your taxes pay for your child's education, yet you don't have a voice in where they are educated. School choice can change all that. Learn more at www.schoolchoiceweek.com.
