A car driving the wrong way down S.C. 170 in Okatie crashed head-on into a truck early Sunday morning, killing both drivers and sending a third person to the hospital, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.
Troopers were called at 12:23 a.m. Sunday to the intersection of S.C. 170 and Tidewatch Drive, just before Riverwalk Business Park, where a 2008 Chrysler 300 heading west in the eastbound lanes of S.C. 170 had collided with a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup in the middle of the intersection, according to Highway Patrol officials.
The driver of the Chrysler, 40-year-old Darryal Lamont Grant, was killed on impact. The driver of the pickup, 46-year-old Lucia Estrada of Ridgeland, also was pronounced dead at the scene, said Beaufort County Deputy Coroner Ed Allen.
A passenger in Estrada's truck who is under the age of 17 was flown by LifeStar helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
The passenger's identity has not been released. Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said the condition of the passenger was not available Sunday.
Estrada was wearing a seatbelt, but Grant was not, according to Highway Patrol.
Troopers have launched an investigation into the wreck. Allen said both bodies were sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy.
Wyant said troopers cannot determine the factors that could have contributed to the crash until the autopsies are complete.
