Lady's Island ice cream shop closes after decade in business

After nearly a decade of scooping ice cream and dishing up lunch, Berry Island Cafe on Lady's Island closed Friday.

The cafe offered all-you-can-eat ice cream and other specials this week to reduce inventory, and owner-operator Charlie Nolette said customers have been calling since the closing was announced. The restaurant was at 1 Merchant Lane in Newpoint Corners.

In 2010, USA Today included Berry Island on its list of 50 best ice cream parlors in the country, naming it top in South Carolina in its "Great American Bites" feature.

"It's hard not to have fun when you are dealing with ice cream," Nolette said.

Closing now was "the cleanest cut" the business could make, Nolette said, partly because it is the end of the tax year. The previous owners operated it for about four years, and Nolette bought it about six years ago.

"It was a combination of several things, some personal burnout and fatigue, and we had honored our lease commitment and other financial commitments, and we figured it was a good time to bow out," he said.

He considered selling, reinventing the shop or moving to a more visible location before deciding to close. Nolette said he had no immediate plans to open another business.

In other changes about town:

  • Lowcountry Running Co. LLC has opened at 95 Factory Creek on Lady's Island after several months of renovations by owner Bob Lamb. Lamb previously managed a sporting goods store in Connecticut. His wife is from Beaufort. The store is a one-man operation, and Lamb said he wants to create a personal, "not stuffy" environment.
  • "I have fun with people when they come in. I don't like sitting behind a counter."
