Arts organizations need private gifts

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina has been struggling practically since it was built and we are now talking about the Town of Hilton Head Island bailing them out.

As a board member for the Main Street Youth Theatre and the Seahawk Theatre Guild, both 501(c)(3) organizations, we have worked very hard with very little money to keep our organizations and programs afloat.

The youth theater just moved back into the Main Street Theatre building after a year-long negotiation on a more affordable lease. We are working toward being a financially sound organization.

The Seahawk Theatre Guild, although affiliated with the public schools, is an independent organization trying to raise enough money to give the students at Hilton Head Island High School and the community a performing arts experience. We just paid $5,000 for the rights to produce "Grease."

These are two great performing venues -- the Main Street Theatre and the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Hilton Head High. But both need money for maintenance; the sound systems in both buildings are in dire need of maintenance and updating.

I urge everyone in this community to reach deep into their pockets and give to a performing arts organization. Give in honor of someone this holiday season or consider planned giving of stock or real estate, or leave a legacy with a bequest in your will. Keep the arts alive and flourishing in this community ... for our sake, and our children's sake.
