Some of the area's boys and girls basketball teams will have a chance to sharpen skills this week at the Bobcat Classic presented by Ultimate Car Wash and Dairy Queen before the start of region play in January.

The boys and girls teams from host Bluffton High School will compete. Battery Creek High School and Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School are also among the local teams competing for the boys tournament title. Whale Branch and Ridgeland-Hardeeville girls will also compete for the girls championship.

The tournament features teams from throughout the country, including teams from Ohio, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky.

Whale Branch girls are 6-2 after a loss to rival Battery Creek on Dec. 19. The Warriors are led by sophomore guard Kemoni Jenkins, who averages 16 points, 4.6 assists and four steals per game. S'Nitra Mack is contributing 15.6 points and 8.8 rebounds.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville girls were 3-2 at the break and Bluffton girls 1-4.

The Bluffton boys, which open tonight against Battery Creek at 7:30 p.m., should enter as one of the local favorites. The Bobcats defeated rival Hilton Head Island High School and Ridgeland-Hardeeville before the break.

The Battery Creek boys are 3-5 after a 65-34 loss at Whale Branch on Dec. 19.
