A Beaufort fisherman is dead and a second is hospitalized for treatment of hypothermia after their 19-foot skiff capsized on the Beaufort River on Wednesday.

The men were fishing for oysters just past Corn Island when the boat capsized, the surviving fisherman told Beaufort Water Search & Rescue officials.

The men stayed atop the capsized boat for a time before one of them tried to swim to shore, the surviving fisherman said.

He did not make it.

The identities of the two men were unavailable late Wednesday night. The men were employed by Sea Eagle, a Beaufort seafood market, according to Robin Clevinger of search & rescue.

The body of the dead man had not been recovered as of 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Both men were wearing life jackets, officials said.
