A Burton man has been charged with performing lewd acts upon a child under the age of 16 at the man's home and at a Beaufort religious organization.
Edi Rolando Suazo , 32, was arrested Friday by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office following a joint investigation with the Beaufort Police Department into reports he inappropriately touched the child, Sheriff's Office Capt. Bob Bromage said.
Bromage said some of the incidents occurred at Beaufort Bible Chapel at 913 West St. It was unclear what, if any, affiliation Suazo has with the chapel. An attempt Monday to seek comment from a chapel official was unsuccessful.
The Child Abuse Prevention Association of Beaufort reported the abuse to authorities after the child described the lewd acts to a CAPA employee after a presentation at the child's school, according to Bromage.
"The reported acts occurred on more than one occasion and at two different locations," Bromage said, referring to Suazo's home and the Bible chapel.
He said Suazo was an acquaintance of the child's family, but declined to provide further details, saying the Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
Suazo, who was born in Honduras, has not been arrested before in Beaufort County, according to online detention center records. Bromage said the Sheriff's Office is still investigating whether he has a criminal background.
Suazo was being held for prosecution, with bail set at $100,000; he also faces questioning about the status of his legal residency by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A copy of an arrest warrant for Suazo was not immediately available Monday afternoon.
Committing a lewd act upon a child is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, according to state law.
