President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats won on Nov. 6. However, exactly what did they win?
The American people voted for them to lead, something neither Obama nor the Senate has done for years (i.e. no budget has come from the Senate for 3.5 years). Congress, not Obama, created Obamacare and the stimulus package. With the exception of the House, there has been no leadership in Washington.
Some say Republicans need to compromise with the Democratic-held Senate and Obama. However, the House proposed dozens of pieces of legislation that Senate leaders simply refused to debate. They did not offer any alternatives.
Now is the time for them to find ways to compromise with Republicans, not the other way around. America is still a center-right country. Conservatism did not lose on Nov. 6, nor did liberalism win.
And please, let's get rid of that absurd notion that the rich are not paying their fair share. If what Obama wishes were enacted, those new taxes in 10 years would pay down just 0.5 percent of our national debt, leaving the remaining 95.5 percent unpaid. How about the 47 percent who pay no federal income taxes pay their fair share?
Obama and the Senate Democrats need to begin leading and to stop obstructing for nothing more than political reasons. For America to continue to be the great country it is, we need them to step forward and jointly fix our many problems.
