Prep Roundup, Nov. 21: Thomas Heyward girls win Coca-Cola Classic

The Thomas Heyward Academy girls basketball team beat Orangeburg Prep, 42-30, to win the Coca-Cola Classic for the fourth straight season in Ridgeland.

Brielle Jungblut was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Jamie Malphrus joined her on the all-tournament team.

Colleton Prep defeated St. Andrew's, 37-27, in the consolation game.

On the boys side, Orangeburg Prep defeated Thomas Heyward 83-41 in the championship.

Davis Owens led the Rebels (1-1) for the second night in a row with 19 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Paul Trimmier scored 24 points to lead Orangeburg Prep, while Chris Hudson added 15. Both were named to the all-tournament team, and Hudson was the MVP.

St. Andrew's defeated Colleton Prep 51-22 in the consolation game.


Hilton Head Christian 45, Beaufort Academy 35: Ziarre Doe scored 19 points and Francesca Guidobono added 10 as Hilton Head Christian beat Beaufort Academy.

Beaufort Academy (1-2) led 19-14 in the second quarter, but Hilton Head Christian went on a 20-0 run over the next 10 minutes. Beaufort Academy climbed to within eight in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.

"They just had better players. They're just deeper," Beaufort Academy coach Joe Matheny said.

Miranda Weslake scored 15 points and Charlotte Delfosse had 12 for Beaufort Academy, which was playing without senior center Megan Debardelaben, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament in the first game of the season.

"We're learning how to play without her," Matheny said. "We've got to get a few more players involved."

Beaufort Academy plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at James Island Christian.

JV: Beaufort Academy 32, Hilton Head Christian Academy 12


Hilton Head Christian 45, Beaufort Academy 32: Zach Polk scored 16 points to lead Hilton Head Christian past Beaufort Academy. Josh Polk and Brad Meccariello each added nine points for the Eagles.

Finn Koppernaes led Beaufort Academy (2-1) with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Conner Akers added eight points.

Beaufort Academy kept the game close, trailing 20-16 at the half and 32-27 at the end of third. But Hilton Head Christian (1-0) outscored BA 13-5 in the fourth quarter.

Beaufort Academy next plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at James Island Christian. Hilton Head Christian plays Tuesday at the Colleton Prep Tournament on Tuesday.
