BEAUFORT -- A Beaufort-based postal service worker is under investigation for not delivering mail on time, according to authorities.
The investigation is being handled by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General in Washington, D.C. Although officials were unwilling to offer details Tuesday, Beaufort's postmaster confirmed that the case, in part, is connected to a complaint made by state Rep. Catherine Ceips, R-Beaufort.
Postal Service spokeswoman Pina Freeberg confirmed Tuesday the
incident occurred "out of the Beaufort post office," but wouldn't say when or on what route.
Beaufort Postmaster Lacy Gay said Tuesday that all mail in question has been delivered, but wouldn't comment on the job status of the carrier being investigated.
Ceips' campaign adviser, Rod Shealy said Ceips became concerned when several voters complained they had received campaign mail asking them to vote in the May 1 primary a week after the primary had been held.
Gay said the delivery of Ceips' campaign mail is part of the investigation, but he would not give details until the investigation is complete, which is expected to take one to three weeks.
"The bottom line is that since she won, all is forgiven," Shealy said. "We would certainly like to correct this for the future, but we're not going to pursue any drastic action."
Wally Olihovik, a spokesman with the Office of Inspector General, in charge of postal service employee investigations, said the federal agency is not responsible for taking legal action and that results of the investigation would be handed over to the U.S. Attorney's Office and local officials who would be responsible for pursuing any charges.
