A 51-year-old Bluffton chiropractor charged Sept. 3 with felony sexual battery on a child in St. Johns County, Fla., has now been charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct with the same girl in Bluffton, according to the Bluffton Police Department.
Raymond Anthony Delgado, who lives in the Westbury Park neighborhood, faces seven counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor in Bluffton for alleged sexual encounters between with a girl, who is now 17, that began in 2007 and occurred in both Bluffton and St. Johns County, according to a Bluffton police press release.
The girl, who was 14 when the alleged encounters began, was a Delgado family friend who lived with the chiropractor at his former Hampton Hall home in the summer of 2007, said Lt. Bryan Norberg, a department spokesman. The girl stayed with Delgado between June and August and also stayed in Bluffton with relatives for extended periods during the past three years, Police Chief David McAllister said Friday.
"He got to know her family -- befriended them," Norberg said Monday. "Her family, or guardian, allowed her to stay at his residence that summer."
Police believe the sexual encounters also occurred at Delgado's Bluffton office, the Carolina Chiropractic & Holistic Center at the Plaza at Belfair, Norberg said.
"She ended up going to work with him on numerous occasions," he said. Delgado remains in the St. Johns County Jail on a $7 million bond, Norberg said. He did not know whether an extradition hearing for Delgado would take place. A spokesman for Florida's 7th Judicial Circuit Court's Office could not be reached for comment Monday.
Delgado was charged with seven counts of sexual battery on a child between the ages of 12 and 18 after he was arrested Sept. 3 in St. Johns County at a location he and the girl had agreed upon, according to a St. Johns County Sheriff's Office release.
If convicted of the Florida charges, he could face 30 years in prison for each count. If convicted of the Bluffton charges, he could face a maximum of 20 years.
A trial date for Delgado in Florida has not yet been set, according to that state's 7th Judicial Circuit Court's Office.
St. Johns sheriff's deputies began investigating Delgado in early August after the girl reported sexual abuse to deputies, a St. Johns sheriff's spokesman said.
Investigators have said similar allegations have been made by others in the Bluffton area but have not been confirmed.
"We are continuing to explore whether there may be more victims," Norberg said.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call Sgt. Joseph Babkiewicz at the Bluffton Police Department at 843-706-4560.
