Sheriff's deputies discovered the body of a 52-year-old Hilton Head Island man at the Pinckney Island boat landing Sunday morning, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
The deputies arrived at the boat landing shortly after 8 a.m. in response to a "found property" report from a man who was at the boat ramp.
When the deputies searched the area, they found the body of a black man with gunshot wounds, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.
The victim was identified as Leonard Green by Beaufort County coroner Ed Allen. Allen said an autopsy will begin today at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.
On Sunday afternoon, a Sheriff's Office representative would not identify the property found at the boat ramp or discuss possible motives for Green's shooting.
The Sheriff's Office suspects foul play, according to the press release.
