Beaufort's farmers market has found a new home.
Previously held in the Pigeon Point neighborhood, the outdoor, fresh produce market will move to Freedom Park near the downtown marina when it reopens April 28, said LaNelle Fabian, executive director of Main Street Beaufort, USA.
"We wanted to bring it back to the core downtown commercial district," Fabian said. "The new location right on Bay Street offers great visibility."
The farmers market will run every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. April 28 through Oct. 27 except for two weeks in July during the Beaufort Water Festival, she said.
The market will feature fresh fruit, vegetables and probably fresh seafood. With the exception of boiled peanuts, farmers will not sell prepared foods, so they don't compete with downtown restaurants, Fabian said.
OTHER LOCAL MARKETS
Other markets in the area already have opened or are gearing up for the spring and summer growing
season.
Markets in Bluffton, Port Royal and Habersham offer fresh and prepared locally grown food and entertainment. Bluffton and Habersham markets also feature crafts and other goods.
The Farmers Market of Bluffton 2010 season began in March at The Carson Cottages on Calhoun Street and runs every Thursday from 2 to
7 p.m. through September. It will run in October and November on Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. through Nov. 18.
The Port Royal Farmer's Market begins this week. It runs 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays at the Naval Heritage Park in front of the Naval Hospital.
Habersham hosts a farmers market every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in Habersham Marketplace Square at
13 Market in Burton.
