Meeting on Election Day, the Beaufort County Board of Education discussed two options for the 2013-2014 academic calendar but held off on voting until an upcoming work session.
District academic improvement officer Melissa Sheppard presented the advantages and disadvantages of both options, which were devised during the past two months.
The first day of school on both calendars would be Aug. 19, 2013.
In one option, school would end on May 28.
In the second option, the last day of class would be June 4.
On both calendars, the districtwide spring break would be from April 14 to 20, encompassing both Good Friday and the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing golf tournament.
Sheppard said the first option would allow summer school to start immediately after school ended. It would also allow teachers to pursue professional development opportunities, which are often offered in early June. However, there would be shorter breaks for fall and Christmas, she said.
The second calendar would give students a block of continuous days at the end of the year to better prepare for standardized tests, but would extend the school year until June, Sheppard said.
Board chairman Fred Washington Jr. said he wanted to allow both calendars to "soak in" before the board voted.
"Let's get feedback from parents, (school improvement councils) and other community folks," Washington said.
Both options will be posted on the board's website for review.
The board is expected to take action on the school calendar Nov. 16-17 at a work session.
