Witnesses say they heard gunfire Monday on St. Helena Island, and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating an alleged armed robbery and attempted murder.
Deputies were called at about 2 p.m. to a mobile home on Hagood Lane, where they found blood, bullet holes and a woman's belongings scattered on the front porch. The deputies found no victim or suspects.
Late Monday night, however, a man checked into Savannah's Memorial University Medical Center with several gunshot wounds, according to Sheriff's Office Sgt. Robin McIntosh. Deputies believe he may have been involved in the incident.
A 31-year-old woman who lives in the mobile home and is believed to be the owner of the articles found on the porch also was found. She told deputies the shooting occurred after someone tried to rob her at gunpoint, McIntosh said.
No arrests have been made and no other details were released Tuesday. The investigation continues, McIntosh said.
