A 42-year-old man walking in the middle of Bailey Road in Sheldon was struck by a car Sunday and later died of his injuries, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Vincent Leonard Wright of Seabrook was airlifted from the scene of the hit-and-run accident, which occurred at about 9:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah at 11 p.m., according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

The Highway Patrol said it has not identified the car that struck Wright. Troopers collected evidence at the scene and are piecing together a description of the vehicle, said Cpl. Bob Beres.

The car was traveling north on Bailey Road when it hit Wright and kept going.

Wright was wearing dark clothing and had no reflectors on, according to the Highway Patrol. Beres said troopers are also trying to determine why Wright was in the middle of the road where his body was found.

Ott said Wright's body was sent Monday to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy and toxicology tests, the results of which are pending.
