A man was killed Thursday afternoon during an apparent drug deal at Taylor's Mobile Home Park on Parris Island Gateway in Burton, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office officials say.
At about 2 p.m., a 911 caller reported seeing a wounded man and hearing several shots fired, according to Col. Neil Baxley. EMS responders arrived ahead of authorities and found the wounded man. He died soon after medics took him away by ambulance, Baxley said.
The body was sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for an autopsy, according to county Coroner Ed Allen.
Allen said the man's name is being withheld until his next of kin are notified. He also declined to release other details about the victim.
Yellow crime-scene tape cordoned off an area of about six mobile homes at the front of the park, and deputies searched for evidence for more than three hours.
"The immediate appearance is a drug deal gone bad," Baxley said, adding that the investigation is in an "early, early stage." J.B. Taylor, landowner of the mobile home park, said deputies asked him not to comment on the shooting. Bystanders were asked to do the same.
Baxley said they did not have a description of suspects involved in the shooting as of late Thursday afternoon.
