An 8-year-old Hilton Head Island boy is dead after being caught in the crossfire of a gun battle that broke just before 5 p.m. on Allen Road, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Khali Singleton was playing outside a residence when shots were fired among a group in the area, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said in a news release.
Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division personnel arrived to find the child laying wounded in the front yard.
He was taken to Hilton Head Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott. No other injuries were reported, the Sheriff's Office said.
Four people were detained Saturday night in connection with the shooting, McIntosh said. The release did not say if the four had been arrested.
Efforts to reach McIntosh for more information Saturday night were unsuccessful.
The Sheriff's Office investigation into the incident is continuing, the release said.
