Beaufort County School District's head of human resources has been named an interim superintendent.

Jackie Rosswurm will take over when Valerie Truesdale retires from the school district on Oct. 1. Truesdale announced her retirement July 20. Last week, she accepted a job overseeing technology for the Charlotte-Mecklenberg School District in North Carolina.

Rosswurm, who has been the head of human resources since 2007, said she was "very excited" to take on the new role. Though she's been a teacher, principal, charter school director and chief of staff at the S.C. Department of Education in her 44-year career, the title of superintendent will be new.

Rosswurm said she sees her role as continuing the gains in student achivement that have been made in the last five years.

"We want to continue the momentum and keep moving forward," she said. "I'm so proud of what's occurred here and to continute to be part of that."

She will also continue in her current role in human resources.

The Board of Education voted unanimously for Rosswurm. Board member Steven Morello was absent.

Board chairman Fred Washington Jr. said Rosswurm was the right choice because she is already familiar with the district's programs.

"She knows the ins and outs already," he said. "She's been an integral part of the senior staff, which has been involved in all aspects of operation."

The board also named a superintendent search committee. Board member Bill Evans and secretary Laura Bush will chair the committee; board vice chairman George Wilson and board member Earl Campbell are also members.

The committee is expected to meet for the first time this week, though the date hasn't been set. Washington said he expects the school board to hire a search firm and seek community input during the process.

Washington said he hopes to have a new superintendent named by March. That person would take over in July. Rosswurm said she would not apply for the position.

It was not clear Tuesday what Rosswurm's salary will be. Washington said negotiations were ongoing.
