The Beaufort County Board of Education has approved the hiring of a new Bluffton Middle School principal and the district's student services officer.

Pat Freda, current assistant principal at Hilton Head Island Middle School, will become the principal at Bluffton Middle. Freda replaces Dereck Rhoads, who was named the district's instructional services chief.

Greg McCord, principal of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg Consolidated District 5, will be the district's student services officer. He will replace Cynthia Hayes, who is retiring in July.

Freda has been in education for 23 years. She began teaching fourth grade and math in New York State. She has taught at Hilton Head Middle since 1995, and been an administrator there since 2009.

McCord will begin the job July 2. He will oversee adult education, student transportation, school choice and transfer requests, youth leadership, behavior intervention programs, student discipline and mentoring programs.
