The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating possible animal abuse involving an abandoned horse, bird and cat on St. Helena Island.
Two people camping on Hidden Oaks Road told a deputy Saturday they had been camping for two days and had not seen anyone feed or water the animals and believed the residence was abandoned.
The deputy's report said the horse's bones were visible, but it "did not appear to be in immediate distress." It noted the bird seemed to have food and water, but the residence was mostly empty. The deputy did not mention the cat.
Efforts by the deputy to contact the owner of the horse were unsuccessful, the report said. Calls to the Sheriff's Office about the case were not immediately returned Friday.
