The Bluffton Township Fire District is planning a $500,000 expansion of its Moss Creek-area station to make room for a dedicated EMS crew.

Early plans call for an addition to be built near the rear of Station 33, located on Buckingham Plantation Drive, to accommodate an ambulance and two new personnel, said Deputy Fire Chief John Thompson.

A recent EMS study by conducted for Beaufort County recommended placing the crew at Station 33, he said.

Beaufort County Council's Public Facilities subcommittee voted Tuesday to move the $498,275 contract to the full council for consideration.

If council approves, the contract would award the project to Seabrook-based construction company Mitchell Brothers Inc. and Beaufort-based architects AAG Associates.

Once the contract is finalized, the fire district can officially hire the architects and builders and seek building permits.

"We don't propose to reinvent wheel," Christopher Caudle, principal with AAG Associates said. "We want it to look like it's always been here. But it's not a design award job. It's an on-time and on-budget job."

He said the project would be timed and designed to minimize disruptions for the four firefighters stationed at the facility, which will remain in use during construction.

The fire district is also spending $2.2 million to replace a 34-year-old fire station at the intersection of Burnt Church Road and Bridge Street near Old Town that has documented structural damage. Construction on that project is expected to begin this fall.
