An argument spiraled out of control in the Beaufort area early Sunday when a woman showed up at the home of her chidren's father and found him with his girlfriend, resulting in attempted-murder charges against two people, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Christopher Gaskins, 25, was arrested at his home on Harding Street after authorities said he fired several shots into the car of Modena Miranda Trejo, with whom he has two children.
Trejo and her cousin Precious Jewel Byam, who was also at the scene, were arrested Sunday after authorities pieced together conflicting accounts of the incident.
Byam was charged with attempted murder and accused of trying to run over Gaskins with Trejo's car, according to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh. Byam was released on her own recognizance, according to the jail log.
Trejo was charged with trespassing and also released.
Trejo arrived at Gaskins' home on Harding Street at about 4 a.m. Sunday to "hook up," according to an incident report released Monday.
Trejo said Gaskins, despite having invited her over earlier, didn't want her at the residence and pushed her off his front porch, causing her to lose her car keys. She told deputies that she called Byam to help her find them.
Gaskins told deputies another story: He said he was in bed with his girlfriend when Trejo showed up and tried to push her way into the residence, screaming, "Who is she? Where she at?" He asked her to leave, she refused, so he pushed her off of his porch, the report said.
When Byam arrived and found the car keys in the bushes, she tried to run over Gaskins as the two women drove away in Trejo's car, Gaskins claims. Byam denied that and said Gaskins was in the road when he began to shoot at random.
Authorities believe Gaskins fired several shots at the vehicle, causing $2,000 in damage, according to the report. He said he fired the shots to slow down or disable the oncoming vehicle -- not to kill or injure anybody, the report said.
He was charged with attempted murder. He is in the Beaufort County Detention Center with bond set at $100,000.
