A lengthy manhunt Thursday on St. Helena Island failed to net a 23-year-old man accused of firing several shots during an argument with his girlfriend.
Beaufort County sheriff's deputies stood watch for hours with shotguns and assault rifles as the agency's K-9 tracking units searched a wooded area near Folly Road for Trehon Boone. He was spotted by witnesses at about noon arguing with his girlfriend at the Folly Road Grocery on Seaside Road, according to authorities.
The couple left the small store and began walking toward Simmons Road when the woman said Boone pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the ground near her, according to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh.
Investigators were told that Boone never pointed the gun at the victim nor shot at her, McIntosh said. No injuries were reported.
When deputies approached, Boone fired several more shots into the air as he fled into a nearby wooded area, prompting the Sheriff's Office to set up a perimeter around Seaside, Simmons and Folly roads.
They searched for more than three hours, until about 4 p.m., when the perimeter was dissolved, McIntosh said.
Boone should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached, McIntosh said.
Boone is 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, according to authorities. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans, but he is believed to have removed his shirt during the pursuit, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Boone has no prior arrests in Beaufort County, according to court records.
