Clifton Taulbert, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated author, will speak to the 2012 graduates of the Technical College of the Lowcountry.

Taulbert published his memoir, "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored," in 1989. The book became a major motion picture. He also wrote the Pulitzer-nominated "Last Train North" and several picture books for children.

He created the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, an interactive online program with examples of people who have used an entrepreneurial mindset to overcome adversity.

The commencement is at 6 p.m. May 11 at the All Weather Training Facility on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. More than 300 graduates will receive associate degrees, diplomas and certificates, according to a news release.
