An assistant principal at Red Cedar Elementary School in Bluffton will take the reins at Port Royal Elementary next school year.

Chavon Browne, a lifelong Beaufort County resident, was teacher of the year at Whale Branch Middle School in 2008-09 and has been assistant principal at Red Cedar since 2009.

Browne has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Clemson University, a master's degree in education administration and supervision from Charleston Southern University, and is working toward a doctorate in instructional leadership at Northcentral University.

Browne replaces Jo Shirley, who will be the principal of Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary.
