As friends and family said goodbye to a 22-year-old Georgia man Wednesday, investigators worked to determine what brought him and another man to a Ridgeland boat landing, where they were found shot to death last week.

Jasper County authorities say they still are unsure what Glenn Settles, 22, of Jesup, Ga., and Watson Kyle Allen, 23, of Bloomingdale, Ga., were doing on Tutens Landing Road before they were shot Friday morning.

"We are following up on some pretty good leads, but I can't give you a reason why they were out there that day," said Lt. Donald Hipp, head of investigations at the Jasper County Sheriff's Office. "There's a lot of speculation ... but nothing we've been able to put our hands around."

Settles and Allen were shot multiple times with a "large caliber" handgun while they were inside a pickup truck, Hipp said.

Their bodies were discovered later that day by a resident who passed the truck on his way to the popular public boat landing nearby.

No items were reported stolen from the truck.

Jasper County investigators, as well as S.C. Law Enforcement Division agents assisting with the case, are interviewing the victims' friends and family to help identify suspects, Hipp said. No suspects have been named.

Settles' funeral was planned for Wednesday in Jesup, where he was a lifelong resident, according to his obituary in the Jesup Press-Sentinel.

Settles was described in his obituary as a "journeyman millwright" who sang in the choir and played guitar at a local Baptist church. He was engaged to be married.

Information about funeral services for Allen was unavailable.
