Two Beaufort County schools will find out Tuesday if they've won a state honor.

Students, parents and teachers from Beaufort Middle and Hilton Head Island High schools will travel to Columbia for the announcement of the Palmetto's Finest Award, presented by the S.C. Association of School Administrators and its partner, Carolina First Bank.

The awards ceremony will be broadcast live online from 6 to 7:30 p.m. by the Beaufort County Channel at www.ustream.tv/channel/the-county-channel-web-feed.

The two schools are among nine finalists for the awards, which are given to two elementary schools, one middle and one high school.

This is Beaufort Middle's second consecutive year as a finalist. Hilton Head High was a semifinalist last year.

Both schools have been visited twice by previous award-winners and other educators. The judges focus on things such as student achievement, faculty training, teaching quality and community involvement. Schools also submitted 20-page applications in the fall, when they first were considered.

Other finalists for the award are: Beech Hill Elementary (Dorchester District 2); Brushy Creek Elementary (Greenville County); Burgess Elementary (Horry County); Stone Academy of Communication Arts (Greenville County); Kelly Mill Middle (Richland District 2); Blythewood High (Richland District 2); and Fort Mill High (York District 4) schools.
