Beaufort High School principal Dan Durbin will resign Friday.

Durbin said the decision was the result of a mutual agreement between the Beaufort County School District and himself.

"There's some rules that I hadn't followed, and that's on me," he said late Wednesday. "I didn't pay attention to them, and they've been pointed out."

Durbin said the rules were related to data entry and students' grades, but declined to elaborate. He did say that he believed his actions were in the best interest of students.

Durbin said he had been discussing the violations with the district for a few weeks. He said he made the decision Wednesday to resign.

"I just want people to know that I'm doing this to try to take ... the attention off of me and put it back on those kids where it belongs," Durbin said.

District spokesman Jim Foster said Wednesday night the district did not have confirmation of Durbin's resignation. He declined further comment.

An attempt to reach district human resources chief Jackie Rosswurm was unsuccessful.

Durbin has been the principal at Beaufort High for about nine years. It was not clear Wednesday who will take over that role.

Durbin said he intends to stay in Beaufort.

"This has become my community, and I like my community, and I like the folks in it," he said.
