A man wanted on charges of involuntary manslaughter for a fatal shooting early Christmas Day at a Bluffton mobile home turned himself in Tuesday morning, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Andrew Bogart, 31, of Bluffton is accused of shooting and killing 25-year-old Adrian Hilliard when a loaded gun he was holding went off. Interviews with witnesses at the home led investigators to believe the shooting was accidental, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

Involuntary manslaughter is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, according to state law. The state must prove criminal negligence, defined as the reckless disregard for the safety of others, the law says.

Bogart, Hilliard and two other men had been drinking, using drugs and passing around Bogart's gun at Hilliard's home on Jade Stone Court, the Sheriff's Office has said.

Hilliard died later that morning after being flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. The cause of death was a shot from the handgun, according to county Coroner Ed Allen.

Investigators had been attempting to locate Bogart for questioning since the shooting, the Sheriff's Office has said.

Bogart fled before deputies arrived at about 1 a.m. Christmas Day, and it was believed he left the state.

He turned himself in at about 7 a.m. at an arranged meeting with investigators, McIntosh said.

Bogart is in the county jail, with bond set at $50,000, according to the online log.

McIntosh said the investigation continues.
