The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says it needs the help of St. Helena Island residents to figure out who shot and killed a 44-year-old man in his driveway Wednesday.

Julius Edward Chaplin was found shot to death after deputies were called to his Fripp Point Road at about 10 p.m. His girlfriend discovered his body in the driveway, the Sheriff's Office said.

Chaplin was shot twice in the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an incident report.

Chaplin's girlfriend told deputies she was inside the home at the time of the shooting and did not witness the crime. She was unable to provide any information about suspects.

Sgt. Robin McIntosh, Sheriff's Office spokesman, said investigators have no suspects, have not determined a motive and do not have many substantial leads.

"This case is really going to depend on assistance from the St. Helena Island community, as we have very little to work with," McIntosh said.
