A 19-year-old Hilton Head Island teen was charged with two counts of felony driving under the influence Thursday after the car he was driving rear-ended a moped, injuring the vehicle's two passengers, according to a South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman.
Mathew Raucci was driving a 2001 Honda west on U.S. 278 about 12:45 a.m. over one of the bridges that connects Hilton Head to the mainland when the car struck the moped carrying a man and a woman, Cpl. Bob Beres said.
The unidentified couple was taken to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center, he said. Their conditions were not known Thursday night.
Raucci was arrested and charged with two counts of felony DUI, Beres said. He was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on his own recognizance Thursday morning, according to the jail log.
If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison for each charge.
